It's mainly illustrations but that's probably the best learning tool for this subject. Williams clearly knows his stuff when it comes to animation. He worked with all the greats, including the Old Men of Disney and he knew some of the other greats like Tex Avery. Interesting, up-to-date, "complete" and very useful guide. Apr 05, Fatine rated it it was amazing Shelves: This book has a great deal of Richard Williams in it and it's absolutely amazing. Of course it does a fine job explaining all the notions necessary to grasp the basics of animation but ultimately, what makes it so enthralling to read is getting to enjoy Richard's perception of the craft and see it manifest through the pages.

This is especially true if one gets the chance to watch the accompanying DVDs while reading the book.

I doubt I'll ever become an animator but I sure did learn a lot from this book! And now I appreciate more the effort that goes into making animations. Can't say I enjoyed the whole journey, though. For someone studying the subject or working in the business the book is surely a gem, but a layman like me might find the countless pages on 'how to make a character walk' quite a slog to go through I totally recommend this book to anyone who has even the slightest dream of becoming an animator.

Full of beautiful and helpful illustrations! There's so much information, I almost want to reread it so I can reinforce what I've learned.

I remember a friend of mine from school saying that doing traditional hand drawn animation was insane because of the countless drawings you have to draw. He's not wrong. Yet, I'd be that insane person who's still interested in doing it after reading this book!

An important book for animators and animation enthusiasts. This has been a useful and faithful tool for me as an animator. I often refer to it.

There's information on the different cycles and variations of them such as run, walk cycles. Learned so much about arcs, acting, body language, twinning, facial expressions, lip sync, etc. Everything is broken down and explained through pictures, drawings, and written explanations in a way that is fun and engaging. There is a lot of information geared to An important book for animators and animation enthusiasts.

There is a lot of information geared towards 2d animators however many of it translates over to 3d animation. Also enjoyed the history and insight into the industry.

I just don't understand why every man in animation has to be a piece of shit.

Nov 10, Julia Milius rated it liked it. More pictures than text, reading through this book helped prepare me to succeed in my animation class. I was able to add tips and tricks from the book that helped set my animation a level above other first time animators in the class. Hearing the many approaches of animators gave me confidence in trying out new and different ways of animating. While one shouldn't include a walk cycle in their portfolio, one does need to excel at a walk cycle in order to achieve better animation.

Wow wow wow. I learnd so much! Im definitely going to use this when I practice animation. Great book for anyone interested or studying animation. The Animator's Survival Kit really drives home that it want for you to learn the fundamentals like the old guys did.

This can be good or bad depending on what approach you like, b ut I personally loved it. Seeing the diagram above for the first time was great because I not only got a helpful tool for dealing with spacing, it's also a look into how animators used to handle this same problem before computers were around.

And the best part is a lot of people still make those little charts next to their drawings when animating on a computer! I guess these old guys really stumbled onto something that not even a computer can replace. Knowing The Character Richard Williams states in this book that animators are like actors who use their pencils to give their performance. Just think about that for a moment. An animator needs to convince an audience that the drawings they've created are alive and have a personality.

If an animator isn't skilled enough the audience won't download the performance; just like an actor!

Everything from the way a ch aracter's eyes are shaped to their posture gives the audience different cues on what the personality of a character is. But then the question arises: How exactly do you choose the right set of characteristics for a character?

It's actually a great cheat-sheet for when you're actually out there animating because there's a visual guide for almost every concept introduced in the book. For enquiries regarding the delivery of your order, contact Star Track Customer Service on 13 23 45 - and quote the above consignment number.

He then jumps pun intended right into human movement, with more than a pages of everything you ever needed to know about walks and runs. Date published: Rated 5 out of 5 by Camille from The Animator's Bible It's hard to encapsulate just how thorough into the animation process this book can get but to simplify, if you were ever told to only pick one book up to learn 2d animation, this is definitely the book you have to choose.
